OUR BEGINnINGS

Since its inception over 30 years ago ELTHAM College has been at the forefront of modern education with the interests of its students at its very heart. Now that legacy is set to continue in 2009 with the Melbourne City School.

ELTHAM was conceived in 1973 as a new concept in independent, coeducational schooling. It was founded by a dynamic group of community members who sought schooling for their children that would look beyond accepted educational practice focused on the ‘average’ student, to an education that fostered the talents, confidence, initiative and passion for learning in every individual. ELTHAM became renowned as the ‘school without bells’ with the philosophy that students should be self-managing individuals. ELTHAM has continued to focus on forward thinking and imaginative education and is constantly adapting to the changing needs of young people and their world. Its teachers support each young person on a journey of self-discovery to unlock their talents and guide them to become empowered with the self-confidence and independence to manage all aspects of their future lives.

The concept for the Melbourne City School was borne from this spirit of innovation and is destined to follow ELTHAM College’s lead as a model of schooling transformation for the 21st century. Located in the heart of the Melbourne business precinct, the Melbourne City School program will set new standards in learning, across traditional literacy and numeracy areas and in the fundamental 21st century skills based around creativity, self management, problem solving, emotional intelligence and self esteem. In addition, the school has been conceived to meet the lifestyle needs of families whose lives centre around the city, residentially, professionally, or both.
