APPROACH

We believe in opportunities, not pathways.

The Melbourne City School will be focused on and organised around young people as they make their journey of discovery through schooling. Their journey will be about enhancing the wonderful and many talents that each of them bring into the school. Breadth of opportunity will ensure that talents grow rather than be channeled narrowly into restricting pathways.

Our primary focus is on releasing the talents of the individual. In doing so we are contributing to the confidence and self-assuredness of our young people, preparing them to be flexible, adaptable and comfortable in an ever changing world. As part of this process we encourage and foster collaboration, exploration, discovery and self-directed learning. By giving our young people a broad and deep foundation in their own experience, they can use their self-awareness to design and build a future for themselves filled with opportunity.

Each young person will have a dynamic learning plan based on knowledge about the individual and their families which will guide all stages of their schooling. This plan will be constantly revised and fine tuned as required so that it truly reflects the changing needs of each young person as they develop.

We see age level and year grouping as less important than the needs, abilities and ambitions of the individual. Our young people will be learning within a range of small collaborative groups or teams. They will be working in appropriate and often different learning groups depending on the activity and the requirements of each person. The social grouping will be collaborative across ages at appropriate developmental stages, giving each individual the opportunity to interact with people their own age, as well as those younger and older.
